How to Convert MBR to GPT Without Data Loss Windows 10

Users are greeted with a warning: installation is not possible because the selected partition has a GPT partition style or there is an MBR table on the disk. It’s time to figure it out and finally switch from MBR to GPT. Especially if your motherboard has a modern UEFI.

This article will show you how to convert MBR to GPT without losing data Windows 10. In any case, you do everything at your own peril and risk. It is not entirely safe to convert the system drive directly from the system. The second SSD drive, which has not yet been converted, was just lying around …

Which is better to choose MBR or GPT

What you need for this: create a bootable drive immediately under the GPT scheme, convert your hard drive, and set UEFI as the main boot mode in the BIOS. Often MBR is for laptops with Legacy / CSM boot, and GPT is already for UEFI computers.

MBR
(Master Boot Record)
This is the traditional structure used to manage disk partitions. The boot record is located in the first sector of the hard disk. Supports up to 4 disk partitions up to 2 TB.
GPT
(Table with GUID Partition)
Globally unique identifiers are used to define the structure of the sections. Allows the creation of 128 partitions on a disk up to 9.4 ZB. Only works with modern OS + UEFI part.

Previously, I only changed the style of partitions on a new NVMe drive. It was divided into 2 parts , 125 GB for the system, and the remaining 350 GB for games and applications. The possibility of creating more than 4 sections does not interest me. But at first glance, Windows 10 boots faster.

How to convert MBR to GPT using Windows 10

Disk management

From the Start  context menu , select Disk Management . Actually, on the left side of the window, find Disk 1 . And in the context menu there is an item Convert to GPT disk .

how to convert gpt disk to mbr

As you can see, the function Convert to MBR or GPT is disabled. This is due to the fact that you need to delete all partitions on the disk. Only then will it be possible to transform it.

Command line

diskpartRuns the Diskpart utility, which is required to manage partitions on hard drives or solid-state drives.
list diskLists available drives in a numbered list (remember the number to be converted).
select disk 1Selects disk number 1 (or specify the serial number of your drive).
cleanAutomatically cleans all data and deletes drive partitions.
convert gptConverts a disk to GPT style (this is for disks larger than 2 TB), you can also specify MBR.
create partition primaryWill create a disk partition (you can specify size = S, value in MB, if you need to create several).
format quick fs = ntfsQuickly formats only the created space (specify the type of the NTFS file system).
assign letter = KAssigns the letter K for the new partition of your disk space.
exit Needed to properly exit the utility and exit the command line.

AOMEI Partition Assistant Standard Edition

Click on Disk 2 (or yours) and select Convert to GPT . Confirm immediately that you are going to convert the selected disk from MBR to GPT. The current operation may require a restart, click Go and then Restart now …

AOMEI Partition Assistant

This program can not only change the structure of MBR to GPT (and vice versa), but also copy disks, restore partitions, and even create bootable media. Plus, a wizard for transferring OS from HDD to SSD is available. See also: How to Transfer Windows 10 System from HDD to SSD .

MiniTool Partition Wizard Free

Everything needs to be done in the same way. Here select, for example, Disk 2 and click Convert MBR Disk to GPT Disk> Apply . It is highly recommended that you close all pending application changes.

Convert MBR to GPT on Windows Installation

During the Windows installation process, an error occurs: Installation on this disk is not possible. The selected disk contains an MBR partition table. On EFI systems, Windows can only be installed to a GPT disk. You can create a bootable USB flash drive for the MBR or convert the disk to GPT.

The selected disk contains the MBR partition table

Let’s use the console utility MBR2GPT.exe. It allows you to convert MBR table to GPT without data loss. This works in both Windows PE and Windows 10. On the installation screen itself, press Shift + F10 to open a command prompt.

mbr2gpt.exe / disk: 1 / validateSpecifically here, a combination of commands checks to see if the MBR can be swapped in GPT.
mbr2gpt.exe / convert / disk: 1It actually converts the partition table on the system disk.

By default, the MBR2GPT.exe utility runs in the Windows PE Runtime. Using the / allowFullOS switch, you can run partition conversion in the Windows 10 command line.

Convert MBR to GPT on Windows Installation

Important! This disk must be with a Windows bootable area and MBR partition table. Plus cannot contain more than three sections. And in general, it should not have extended sections.

Conclusion

The conversion process is fast and uncomplicated. Anyway, the newer GPT partition structure has fewer restrictions. In it, loading occurs at an early stage, depending on your configuration. On the other hand, MBR is stable and has maximum compatibility.

It’s good that I finally switched to GPT (Table with GUID partitions). Even visually, Windows 10 starts to load faster. Plus, Microsoft has integrated the MBR2GPT.exe tool. It can be used to safely convert MBR to GPT right in the command line.
